Innovative zoonotic disease research since 2005.

Bridging molecular biology, vector ecology, and population health through accessible science.

What we do

We do three things - the moleular work, culture work, and tick work.

The laboratory of medical zoology bridges education and research with hands-on experience. At our lab, students are making their own contributions to science and furthering their careers.

Our History

  • Fernald Hall

Fernald Hall, where the Zoology labratory opperater out of, is named after Charles H. Fernald. Fernald was Born on March 16, 1838, in Mt. Desert, Maine.

After holding many notable positions in the area, Fernald joined the Massachusetts Agricultural College in 1886 as Professor of Zoology.

After Fernald died in 1921, the new (1910) Entomology and Zoology building was named Fernald Hall in his honor.

  • Origins

This space was finished in 1910 as a space for the early Entomology and Zoology departments at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.

It is a multipurpose space with offices, laboratories, classrooms, a museum space, and an auditorium.

  • Lab Work

This building is home to various labs conducting a wide array of research; the laboratory of medical zoology is one of them.

We are on the first floor of Fernald Hall.

  • Today

Today at the lab, we investigate ticks and mosquitoes and their associated pathogens. Our main focuses in research are biology, interventions, practical approaches, and medical entomology.
